Inspire® Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation

Inspire is the first and only FDA-approved implantable device for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea — an alternative for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP. It is completely mask-free.

How Inspire works

Inspire therapy takes a fundamentally different approach to treating sleep apnea. Instead of using air pressure and a mask, a small device is implanted beneath the skin during a same-day, outpatient procedure.

While you sleep, the device gently stimulates the hypoglossal nerve, which controls the muscles of the tongue and airway. With each breath, it moves these muscles slightly forward, keeping your airway open so air can flow freely.

You stay in complete control: simply press a button on a small handheld remote to turn the therapy on before bed and off when you wake. There is no mask, no hose, and no machine on the nightstand.

The Process

How Inspire therapy works, step by step

A simple, intuitive system that works quietly with your natural breathing.

1. A Same-Day Procedure

A small device is implanted during a same-day outpatient procedure, with most patients returning home the same day and resuming normal activity soon after.

2. Press the Remote

Before bed, you simply press a button on a small handheld remote to turn the therapy on — no mask, hoses, or setup required.

3. The Device Senses Your Breathing

As you sleep, the device continuously senses your natural breathing rhythm and times its therapy precisely to each breath.

4. Gentle Stimulation

Gentle pulses stimulate the hypoglossal nerve, moving the tongue and airway muscles forward to keep the airway open all night long.
